Day 1/ Friday ARRIVAL HOBART & MT WELLINGTON / kunanyi

Welcome to Tasmania! Arrive at Hobart airport and pick up your rental vehicle. Spend the day exploring Tasmania’s capital. Hobart is a quaint city which features many preserved colonial sandstone buildings. Take a scenic drive to the alpine wilderness of Mt Wellington (Kunanyi), the 1270m peak, which provides the dramatic backdrop to the city and offers stunning views (weather dependent). You might like to venture along one of the many tracks. Wellington Park is home to lots of local wildlife, such as the long–nose potoroo, pademelons, bettongs, southern brown and eastern barred bandicoots, possums and eastern quolls.

This morning get close to Tasmania’s iconic character, the Tasmanian Devil while visiting the Bonorong animal sanctuary. Then travel through the picturesque Derwent Valley dotted with orchards, hop fields and quaint reminders of the historic origins of the area to one of Tasmania’s oldest and most diverse national park – Mount Field. Explore the green forest canopy where you crane your neck to see some of the tallest flowering trees in the world. The majesty of Russell Falls is revealed after a short stroll through the lush rain forest. This cool temperate rainforest gives you the opportunity to search for some of Tasmanians 12 endemic bird species including Scrubtit, Black Currawong and Tasmanian Thornbill.

Day 3 / Sunday Maria Island

Escape the city and travel up the scenic East coast to the seaside village of Triabunna. Embark on the ferry, crossing the Mercury Passage to Maria Island National Park. Only a short cruise, but a world away. Enjoy a day of peaceful walking amongst historic ruins, along sweeping bays, rugged fossil cliffs and imposing mountains. Watch for the island’s resident wombats, Cape Barron geese and kangaroos! Return to Hobart later in the afternoon.
